Who we are
Spirit of Aylestone is a community group that seeks to foster relationships in the community through service provision and events that will facilitate improvements in Aylestone’s environment; sense of identity; enjoyment of the arts; practice of justice; and spiritual awareness. We also try to have plenty of fun along the way!
How it began - the Festival
The group grew out of the Spirit of Aylestone Festival, a week-long celebration in June 2004 of community life within Aylestone, which drew together art exhibitions, drama and musical performances, special church services, a pub quiz, a community fun day, a treasure hunt around the village, guided walks, a senior citizens games afternoon, and a range of workshops and opportunities for people to get together.
Churches serving the community
As with the Festival, Spirit of Aylestone is overseen and driven by members of Aylestone's churches, but it seeks to draw together and support a much wider collection of people and projects than just those associated with the churches.
Since its inception in 2005, Spirit of Aylestone has laid on a number of theatre productions, music gigs, and children's activities in Aylestone, as well as being a local voice for a number of justice campaigns, such as Make Poverty History, or the Countdown to Copenhagen climate campaign. We also support local events such as August's annual Aylestone Hall Garden Party, and organise the successful 'Carols in the Park' in Aylestone Hall Gardens each Christmas, along with Carols in the Pub at the Black Horse.
